Equity In Data

At Discriminology we use data to validate the need for change. We believe that data transparency and accessibility is critical to building trust and empowering communities of color. Local Education Agencies (LEAs) are obligated to make data on school equity available to parents and the public. This transparency helps to protect families by informing them on how schools in their community are doing and where there is room for improvement. By leveraging our data-driven core, we provide a connecting point for school districts and communities to identify quantifiable areas of growth, collaborate, then act.

Built with the goal of promoting equity in education through data transparency and a standard methodology for scoring school districts on racial disproportionality, we facilitate the development of new technologies that can be used by educators, researchers and activists as building blocks to create Culturally Responsive Education Systems (CRES). These systems provide the intellectual structure, conceptual framing and tools of measurement needed to establish new frontiers in equity, excellence and prosperity.

Our Focus

More than 60 years after the United States Supreme Court ruled that it was unconstitutional to send African-American students to separate & unequal schools; we still have an education system that continues to dramatically disadvantage minority children, families and communities. The implicit biases that exist in our education system is a big contributor to the negative trends that we see in school data for students of color. Of particular interest to us is information on school discipline, gifted talented identification, special education placement and culturally diverse curriculum. The research and data are clear, minority students still don't have equal access to true education and its pushing our children out of schools and into prisons. The Challenge

We know true education must consider everything and yet, there is a great disparity in how minority students are taught & treated in our public school system. From the data available, we know that African-American and Hispanic students are disproportionately suspended, expelled, labeled with disabilities & referred to the criminal justice system. In addition to being under taught culturally significant material, students of color continue to be at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to receiving quality public education on equal terms.

"Enhancing the capacity of parents to hold our public education system accountable"

Power to the People

America's education system is broken and it's failing our children and hurting our communities. Our mission is to protect minority children from excessive school punishment, disproportionate special education placement and culturally insensitive and inaccurate curriculum. We accomplish this by enhancing the capacity of parents to hold our public education system accountable through the curating of public information and social media. Tell Your Story >>
